I Remember

A mosaic of writing from Nate’s Workshop Group from a morning in Riegrovy Sady Park. This exercise is modeled after Joe Brainard’s unconventional memoir, I Remember:

I remember becoming friends with a girl on the first day of second grade because we wore the same navy-blue suede Mary Jane’s that squeaked on the school floors.

I remember when a bird flew into our house once before church (we were late).

I remember watering dead flowers.

I remember a dream where I did a cartwheel.

I remember learning what clouds are made of.

I remember learning cursive in the dark.

I remember being scared of dogs, even ones smaller than my teddy.

I remember my first homework assignment. It was a sheet of addition exercises, and my teacher called me clever.

I remember the deep-set fear of needles (and lightning).

I remember 8:30 AM on Thursdays.

I remember every wedding having tables filled with brassy blonde heads of hair–saying I’m sorry to every wrong “Mom…”

I remember the day snowflakes appeared on the lamposts in Amsterdam.
