Today we embarked on our first shared writing exercise.  Together, we read Gay Talese’s essay, New York is a City of Things Unnoticed.  In it, Talese catalogs the seemingly mundane details of city life in New York and creates a powerful compendium of beautiful observations often overlooked.  We sent our intrepid writers out in small groups to create their own catalogs of Prague’s unnoticed things.  Here’s a snippit or two of what each of our students brought back.

Emma
juxtaposition of graffiti and historical architecture

Maddy
the way the pastels of the buildings contrast with the dark rich colors of the flowers on their windowsills

Marc
green (copper?) nouveaux goddesses on creamy stone

Anna
pigeon eating multicolored, stepped-on cereal pieces; didn’t mind the camera

Caroline
spinning cast shadow lantern in a cafe

Mathilde
lavender growing in a yellow attic window box

Elisa
a young girl running down the street, a well-loved teddybear in hand, a dog’s leash in the other

Laura
pieces of art everywhere i.e. the walls and buildings

Maddie
grass growing inbetween cobble stones, blending nature and the city.

Alexa
faces of the past built into me; walls watch over me; now modern city

Victoria
overheard conversations through cigarette butts lighting up cobbled hallways of pastel
